Bengal Cotton Tant sarees – the all season saree
Indian traditional wear is all about saree and sarees are probably one of the oldest surviving pieces of garment that has survived and even flourished till today.
The Bengal Cotton or Tant saree flourished during the Mughal
period. It became so famous around the British rule that the British government
tried to minimize its production so that the British textile industry
flourished. After the end of British rule in India, many skilled weavers
settled in and around Bangladesh and West Bengal after getting lots of help
from the Government. These weavers continued weaving this style of tant saree
and today these are one of the most popular styles of Bengal sarees.
Tant sarees are made of cotton and found in different colors
or patterns. Traditionally, tant sarees were woven in handlooms. However, now a
days, the power looms have replaced majority of the older handloom machines.
Bollywood actresses wear Bengal cotton sarees for festive occasions like Durga Puja. Bipasha Basu wore tant cotton saree in the Bengali movie ‘Shob Charitro Kalponik’, on the other hand, Rani Mukherjee and Konkona Sen Sharma are also famous for their styling of tant cotton sarees. And Soha Ali Khan has imbibed her fascination for tant cotton sarees from her mother Sharmila Tagore.
